Do I still have to deal with mood swings at this time of my life? Oh well 😔
As a creative person, my melancholic side cannot be pushed aside. A lot of people know me both ways. I can be super outgoing and excited about people but I can also be mute, withdrawn and distant.
It’s hard to keep up with mood changes especially when it’s not entirely intentional. Anything can trigger my withdrawal; a song, a statement, a thought, name it… It just takes me into a world I can’t come out from.
It’s a painful process to have a mood and not find a way to bring yourself out of it. Can you imagine missing out on cool things because of a mood you won’t be able to explain in few hours? Like missing out on Pizza and Ice cream because of one mood swing, arrrgh!
I’ve tried several ways not to find myself in this situation but to no avail. From research, I realize that mood swings is a health disease and a symptoms of serious health issues.
Stress, depression, lack of sleep, PMS (Premenstrual syndrome) and even something as serious bipolar disorder can cause mood swings.
If you have mood swings, it’s important you take it seriously.
According to my experience plus findings, there is no magic trick that helps to deal with mood swings (medically) but good sleep and less caffeine would go a long way. Do creatives really get any sleep? Oh well!
I asked my Instagram followers and WhatsApp contacts about how they deal with their mood swings but most people just wanted me to let them know when I find a solution. Apparently, a lot of people are dealing with the mood issue.
I’m a work in progress but I’m trying different ways to cope with mood swings. It’s a pretty lonely place and that’s where the worst conversations go on.
Below are some ways I cope, hopefully this can help you too;
*I’ve customized my conversations and turn my moods into an haven. Whenever I forcefully try to get myself out of a mood, I sink in deeper. So I turn it into good use.
*I talk to the Holy Spirit, sometimes it takes the form of prayer. I just express myself and exactly how I feel to Him. It soothes me. Sometimes, I find myself eventually laughing at myself.
*I turn to work and try as much as possible to avoid talking to anyone. This probably looks like I’m doing myself in but this keeps the relationships around me healthy. I realize, I become grumpy and irritable whenever I engage in conversations during those times. It’s better to avoid it.
*I change my environment. I take a long or short walk sometimes, depending on the time I’ve got on my hands. This puts me in a peaceful state. Perhaps, I got irritated by the environment or a particular thing triggered the mood. Leaving the place brings more calm and helped me refresh.
*I think happy thoughts by listening to happy music. Sometimes it’s watching funny videos. During my birthday shoot, some event before the shoot was already pushing me towards a bad mood. Immediately, I requested for funny videos by Maraji that cracked me up. I love the one about the different type of gossipers and bankers. It works like magic for me.
*Tell someone exactly how you feel, even when you don’t know how you feel. Just expressing yourself helps you to make an effort to come out of it. Even though sometimes, you just want attention. Why not get it for yourself?
According to a follower on my Instagram page (Follow me here) she had this to say;
“Oh well I keep to myself when I am in one of those moods. I do this because people usually don’t understand why I am suddenly extremely quiet or not interested in having any kind of conversation. I try not to let my mood determine my attitude to people around me. Sometimes listening to music can help your mood. Gospel songs something that will uplift your spirit and something that will cheer you up.”
